Annaleigh Ashford Really Drew A Penis In This ‘Impeachment’ Scene
The first episode of Impeachment: American Crime Story aired, and given the subject matter, it may soon prove to be the most controversial of Ryan Murphy’s factual dramas to date, following the critically acclaimed and commented film The people against OJ Simpson and The assassination of Gianni Versace.
The season premiere, titled “Exiles,” ostensibly focused on Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) and Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson), but also included scenes in which official Paula Jones (Annaleigh Ashford) pursued litigation against POTUS, Bill Clinton (Clive Owen), for sexual harassment.
One scene in particular stood out from viewers, as it featured Jones pulling the president’s penis from memory. The sketch is never shown on screen, only referenced in the reactions of the characters, but in a recent interview with The Envelope, actress Annaleigh Ashford, who plays Jones on the show, revealed that she made draw a penis while filming, for the sake of realism.
“In real life, she, Paula Jones, in all of this court documents claims that Bill Clinton’s penis had a distinctive shape at the bottom,” Ashford said. “And it’s documented. It’s something else, all that, you can just go read it in the court documents. And it was kind of a selling point for her lawyers that she was genuine.”
“And so that day Ryan thought it was an important detail to add because it was so important to the case,” she continued. “And the first time I drew the penis, we kept repeating it, and the first time I laughed like a schoolgirl. It was like I was in seventh grade again and I didn’t know either. how to draw dick. And so I drew it and then I laughed a lot. Full laughed out loud, I looked at Taran Killam, I laughed, I messed up the take. I made them laugh all the cameramen, everyone in the room laughed. I was like, ‘I’m so sorry. I feel like I’m in fifth grade and I’m drawing a penis on the wall. It was so funny. “
Ashford added, however, that despite his initial laughs, it was important to everyone involved in the filming of the scene that the moment not to be played for laughs. “It wasn’t a funny moment for us,” she said. “It was really serious because Paula Jones drew this penis to prove her experience was genuine, which is also heartbreaking.”
