Apparently, drinking boiled lettuce water to help you fall asleep is one thing.
There’s a new TikTok hack doing the trick, and this one might actually be legit. Luttuce explains.
TikToker @ shapla_11 jumped onto the platform yesterday explaining that she had heard of a hack that could put you to sleep instantly. The trick, which we had never heard of until now, says that all you have to do is boil some lettuce leaves in a cup and drink the lettuce water.
“So apparently drinking lettuce water makes you drowsy..is don’t sleep, so I’ll give it a try,” she explains.
“Update, the lettuce has crack because your sister left,” she says at the end of the video, after trying the hack.
It’s important to note that while @ shapla_11 does add peppermint tea to the concoction to make it taste better, she then addressed this tip with a disclaimer in the comments.
“Btw guys don’t use peppermint – apparently it keeps you awake, so for best results use chamomile tea or avoid adding any other tea,” she wrote.
So, is it legitimate? Well the folks at Pedestrian did some research for us and it turns out that there is a study that explains the very real effect of lettuce on sleep.
Lettuce contains high levels of lactucarium, which researchers say can make you feel relaxed and drowsy.
“Lactuca sativa (lettuce), an annual herb that belongs to the Compositae family, is known for its medicinal value. Traditionally, lettuce has been suggested to have a sedative-hypnotic property. . Lactucopicrin and lactucin are the main active compounds in lactucarium and are said to have analgesic activity equal to or greater than that of ibuprofen in mice, ”the researchers explain.
“Additionally, lettuce seed oil has long been used as a sleeping pill and to relieve pain and inflammation in traditional medicine.”
But don’t go running to Salad Island just yet, it depends on the type of lettuce: romaine lettuce (cos) had a higher lactucin content than the green and red varieties of lettuce. Plus, there isn’t any real research specifically behind the whole tea situation, so drink it if you dare.
