Arnold Schwarzenegger and Joseph Baena share a workout selfie
Shortly after Arnold Schwarzenegger shared a snippet of his workout and expressed how happy he was to be able to resume his routine at Gold’s Gym, his son Joseph Baena posted a mid-workout photo of the two on Instagram.
The two regulars at Gold, the two often go to the gym together, and Baena has previously referred to her dad as “the best training partner in the world.” He’s also used to recreating Schwarzenegger’s famous flexing poses from his time as an award-winning bodybuilder.
“This selfie was taken moments before my dad suggested I do ‘forced reps’ for the rest of the workout,” Baena wrote in the caption. “You have to do everything and absolutely NO cheating when you train with him, so you know I’m going to suffer tomorrow. Row overload, bench press, pull downs, etc. I get all the last reps. Another great approach to training and a fantastic way to gain size and strength! Try it with your training partner 💪 “
While there are certainly benefits to forced reps, it must be said that this is an advanced form of exercise that you absolutely should do not do if you’re new to the gym or training without a partner.
“Basically your partner is ‘helping’ you with the load of a few reps so you can lead to some more muscle failure and push more metabolic damage into the muscle – which could lead to more growth,” explains Men’s health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel CSCS
“The best option or the everyday equivalent is the dropset,” he continues. “Do as many reps as you can with a weight, then take a lighter weight and stack a few more reps.”
