Benefits of Echinacea – What This Plant Can and Cannot Do

In capsule, dropper, or tea form, many people believe it helps boost your immunity. Proponents also argue that it can prevent a cold or alu – and shorten the duration of either – and treat STIs. Wait, there is more! Because the common cold and Covid-19 are both coronaviruses, they believe that means Echinacea can fight Covid as well.

Benefits of Echinacea

The many purported benefits of echinacea have been studied, but “a lot of studies have looked at animals and cells in the lab,” says Abby Langer, RD, author of Good food, bad diet. Although a 2020 review found that taking an echinacea supplement did not prevent an upper respiratory infection, doing it at the first sign can reduce symptoms.

Taking an echinacea supplement the first day after you notice symptoms may reduce your cold or flu, says Brian St. Pierre, RD, a Men’s health nutrition advisor. Nevertheless, adhere to the proven preventive measures: wash your hands, sleep well and eat healthy.

Does echinacea treat STIs?

And, yes, echinacea supplements probably won’t do anything for STIs. The myth has been circulating in homeopathic circles, and the little research that exists focuses on varying dosages. Be wary of any over-the-counter (or “expert” medical) supplement that says echinacea treats herpes, HIV / AIDS, or urinary tract infections. There is no consistent research yet.

Does Echinacea Protect Against Covid?

Scientists have not proven that Echinacea prevents or treats Covid-19. The common cold and Covid are both viral respiratory illnesses, but Covid-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2, and colds are often caused by rhinoviruses. There is currently no research showing that Echinacea supplements protect you from Covid. Masks and vaccines do it.
