Healthy eating habits for disease prevention
BALTIMORE, Maryland – Many have heard that diet and exercise are essential to a healthy lifestyle, but sometimes it’s easier said than done.
June is Men’s Health Month and WMAR-2 News spoke with a hospital chief who said he wanted to help people eat well so they stay healthy and out of life. ‘hospital.
Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of death for men in the United States. Most health experts believe that these illnesses are often fought with good nutrition and regular check-ups with a doctor.
MedStar Harbor Hospital Executive Chef Tim Norris said, “Most of the diets men follow are high in fat and these fats are free of the omega-3 fatty acids you need to help keep your heart going. We don’t eat some of these things, and it’s almost at the last minute that we have problems.
Problems such as finding each other and getting treatment in a hospital. This advice comes from Norris who has been involved in the food and nutrition industry in one way or another for almost 30 years.
“I went to visit a family member years ago in the hospital, I didn’t like food at all. If I ever get the chance to work in a hospital, I will help change that. I am in a hospital now. I did not plan it. It just happened like that, ”Norris said.
Chef Tim recommends a high-fiber diet that offers a long list of health benefits, such as helping men lose weight, lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers.
“When you eat a high-fiber diet, it’s your soluble dietary fiber. This will create the cessation. Stopping is when your body tells you it’s full. So, it comes from consuming beans and high fiber items like that. Insoluble ones, like skins, most people throw away, those things are good for you, ”Norris said.
Even Chef Tim admits he has a soft spot for snacks like chili fries and nachos. However, he doesn’t think you should give up your favorite snack if you eat it in moderation.
“If you start exercising and dieting the right way, you will find that you are putting great things into your body. You are going to want to put big things in your body because you are starting to see results. You don’t get that slow food, fried food, which you want to stay away from, ”Norris said.
Chef Tim recommends better snack foods.
“Carrots, celery, fresh fruit, onions, pumpkin seeds, things like that, high in fiber, but at the same time, they’re very filling,” Norris said.
Soluble fiber makes your stomach feel full. it is also the type of fiber that dissolves in water. It’s something the chef drinks a lot as part of his or her own diet.
“I make about six to four liters a day. I do this because I’m always in the kitchen, running and riding a lot. So I sweat a lot, so I want to put that back in me, ”Norris said.
While Chef Tim prepares a high-fiber meal of chicken, quinoa, fresh peppers, and other healthy foods, he recommends young men get about 38 grams of fiber per day.
Our digestive system slows down as we get older, so men over 50 only need about 30 grams of fiber.
“You need 2 1/2 cups of fruit, 2 1/2 cups at least, lean protein and lean protein servings, chicken and turkey. In a way, avoid red meats as you get older because it takes your body longer to process them, ”Norris said.
Meanwhile, doctor-recommended vitamins may help fill in the gaps, but the chef believes they’re no shortcut to healthy eating.
“It doesn’t matter whether you take the vitamin or not. If you’re still not dieting properly, you’re not exercising, you’re just taking a supplement. Again, vitamins are supplements, they’re not what’s going to help you if you’re not already doing the things you’re supposed to be doing in the first place, ”Norris said.
