Although he played Superman over five years ago in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Henry Cavill stays in superhero form all year round. His role as monster hunter Geralt in the new Netflix Witcher The franchise has seen the 38-year-old continue to build strength and fitness with combat stamina to match.
Working with Hollywood strength brain Dave Rienzi – typically associated with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s steadfast workout regimen – has seen Cavill grow into a formidable force in the weight room. In a recent question-and-answer interview with Bodybuilding.com, Cavill shared a few workout philosophies that have driven him to push the limits in the gym and on the set.
“I went through peaks and troughs in my physique, depending on the difficulty of a job, the amount of physical work I put into it and having to take time off afterwards and not having access to the same facilities to train, ”Cavill said in the interview when asked how his fitness priorities have changed. “One of the great things now is that I’m investing to make sure I always have these facilities available to me.”
If this sounds familiar to you, it’s the same approach Johnson took to building his home fitness mecca, the “Iron Paradise”. For Cavill, the ideal home gym would be a “maximum” setup, “a large space, with all the necessary equipment”. And, as he admits in the interview, he’s “better at everything now. It’s been 10 years. [since Man of Steel], so I think I’m more experienced now and have more experienced muscles. “
So how well does Cavill do these workouts and should you do the same? “It depends on what I’m trying to accomplish,” he explains. “And how level I am with my body and also how much time I have. The deeper I get into a job – if it’s hard, time-consuming and taxing work – I’ll ask my coach to schedule things differently. I would work out four times a week instead of six and on day four a very simple arm and shoulder workout … I don’t come out of the gym thinking ‘I need a nap immediately’ ” .
When asked for advice for his younger self – and, we suppose, anyone else who turns to Cavill for his guidance on training – “find someone who knows what they’re talking about and listen to them. get good at cooking, ”he laughs. “It’s not meant to be easy, it’s meant to be hard, so mentally prepare yourself for an hour or two of hard work.”
Hard work is also replicated in the Cavill diet. Talk to GQ, it will start with “a spoon and a half of 100% grass-fed whey protein with a cup of oats and berries and mix it all up … The other part is an omelet with a little ham in it, and I think it’s about six ounces of beef tenderloin. I’m going to move on to meal two about three hours later, which is chicken and white rice with a curry sauce, because I like the flavor.
“The third meal is still three hours later and will be the same, but with brown rice. Then the fourth meal will be, I think about four ounces of beef with sweet potatoes. I kinda like sweet potato fries because I’m not a huge fan of sweet potatoes … so this is the pre-bed [protein] shake. Ideally, another three hours later, but if time is running out and I have to go to bed, then it’s okay an hour and a half, two hours later. ”
