Juancho Hernangomez in the Spanish squad despite his injury
It’s a certain recovery.
Ten days later Spain excluded Juancho Hernangómez from the Olympics due to a dislocated shoulder suffered during an exhibition match against France, he reversed named him to the team for Tokyo after all.
The Spaniards are +900 to win the gold medal at BetMGM, the third best odds of the 12 competing teams.
Hernangómez, who starts off as a small forward for Spain and plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves, suffered what Spain called a “grade 4-5 acromioclavicular dislocation in his left shoulder” on July 8. notes for dislocated shoulders are progressively severe, with 1 being a slight sprain and 6 representing all kinds of ruptures and detachments in the upper body.
So what happened? According to the official statement, further assessment of the injury by staff at the Spanish federation, the official national team hospital and the Timberwolves has determined that the 25-year-old Hernangómez could eventually make it to the Olympics. More precisely, Spain called it “la posterior evolución de la dolencia”, which roughly translates to “the subsequent evolution of the injury”.
Recovery time for dislocated shoulders varies from case to case, and we only know what Spain tells us about the injury. But the Mayo Clinic cautions that “resuming activity too soon after a dislocated shoulder can injure you or dislocate your shoulder joint again”.
So let’s look at the timeline of Spain. It’s already been 11 days since the injury, and Spain’s Group C schedule will last from July 26 to August 1, meaning Hernangómez will have had 24 days of recovery if he doesn’t play in the group stage. Group C includes Luka Doncic’s Slovenia, host country Japan and an intermediate Argentina, and the top two teams automatically advance to the knockout stage, while two of the three third teams also advance.
Can the Spaniard risk missing Hernangómez for these matches? It seems like a safe bet to give him three and a half weeks of rest. Spain is ranked No. 2 in the world by FIBA and won a medal at each of the three previous Olympic Games, but never won gold. Spain are starting Marc Gasol, Ricky Rubio and other NBA veterans so it doesn’t really hurt for talent at this level.
How much Hernangómez is suffering will be revealed during the Games. It is already a victory that he is aiming for in the first place.
