Peloton’s private clothing brand is here to enhance your workout wardrobe

“The clothes were never even going to be part of Peloton history,” says Foley. While the company knew it wanted a retail business and a studio to film classes with clothing available, early pieces simply saw the Peloton logo or phrases applied to items purchased from other vendors. It was fun and made the members feel like they were part of something, prompting Foley and his team to reach out to other vendors for exclusive drops. But working with different brands, Foley didn’t have control over the designs, not as much as she wanted. And when it comes to sizing, there was no consistency across the brand. Customers wrote with product reviews, commenting on the fit of bras and leggings, offering details on stitching, feel and fabrics. Foley read every email.
“This is what inspired us to create our own production team, our design team, our technical design team and to do it ourselves. We had more control and were able to deliver exactly what we know our members have been asking for since the start of the business, ”says Foley. “We will continue to make fun collaborations with interesting brands to bring freshness and novelty to our members, because we really aim to please. We want to make sure that if you are a Peloton member, you come to our website and find things that you like. You find things that work for you.
Key to Foley’s design process was creating clothing that not only suited the various fitness modalities available on the fitness platform, but was also high performing and inclusive to the body. Where athletic wear has long been modeled on a certain body type that tends to exclude more than celebrate a range of moving bodies, Peloton’s private label is changing that after direct response from its own community. As Foley explains, in 2018 women from the very large tribe in the community wrote to express their feeling of being excluded from the clothes available to members, asking Foley where the XL, both XLs, or the XLs were located. three XL. For a platform that had made a name for itself as an inclusive community, these women felt invisible.
“It was then that my team and I felt we were heartbroken. The thought of us never excluding a member, ”says Foley. “We knew we had to make it ourselves because our suppliers weren’t making those sizes anymore. They were just using the standard. So we brought in some of the founders of the extra large tribe and asked them “what are your favorite brands?” What do you like to wear?’ We have been doing user research, and we’ve been doing it for a lot with the different tribes that have formed in our community.
The result is a collection that encompasses the body and features styles and accessories for men, women and non-sexists. Everything from the fit to the fabric and colors has been carefully considered, with Foley keenly aware of every detail. This meticulous approach is evident in the fabric selection, which includes four exclusive Peloton clothing fabrics that offer a number of different functions and benefits, from high performance compression fabric to ultra-soft everyday pieces. Now more than ever, Foley knows the importance of parts that not only work for a workout, but have the style to go with us in our daily activities.
“My life is really planned down to the minute. I know I’m going to do a practice at 9 a.m. even though I have a meeting at 10 a.m. So I’m going to train at 9 a.m. and finish my training at 9:59 a.m. in time for the Zoom call. These leggings must therefore be very versatile. It should keep me at ease; I need to be able to run in it and it compresses me enough that I don’t wiggle all over the place. But still, when I sit down for my zoom call, it doesn’t have to choke me, ”says Foley. “We understand that people want to be comfortable at home but also want to look good, so we also have structured stuff. We understand that people wear this all day, to go out and to work. We have such a busy lifestyle that they work out, then have a quick run to the grocery store or pick up their child. We want to make sure they have some cute stuff to wear for it.
While the world of sportswear has become a saturated market, Peloton’s private label clothing collection stands out from the crowd. If not for the pieces that look and feel amazing, then for the logo itself. When you wear Peloton, you represent the community and the people who encourage you, support you and push you to achieve your goals. “You go out into the world and you have a Peloton logo on you, and maybe the other person is a runner too and that helps the community to recognize and say hello to each other. It also helps build our community, not just on the platform and the leaderboard, but around the world. ”
