Red-white scrum set with free men’s hoops for Saturday
HOUSTON– University of Houston men’s basketball fans can get their first glimpse of the Cougars starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday during the team’s red-white scrimmage inside Fertitta Center.
The event is free and open to the public, and all are welcome to attend. The Red-White Scrimmage will start shortly after being three-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Kelvin Samson and its staff complete their annual coaching clinic.
The Holman Street doors of the Fertitta Center will open at 11 a.m. Saturday. Paid parking will be available at the stadium garage visitor entrance on Holman Street or on the street. No free parking will be available.
Under Sampson’s leadership, Houston was ranked in the top five in the nation in several preseason rankings by media organizations, including first place by the editors and writers of The Almanac.
The main guard is in the lead Marcus Sasserwho energized Houston Basketball fans with his decision in June to opt out of the NBA draft and return to the Cougars for his senior season.
The Dallas native led the Cougars with 17.7 points per game in 12 games before being sidelined for the remainder of the 2021-22 season after foot surgery.
Sasser has been named to several preseason All-America teams, including first-team selections by The Almanac, Blue Ribbon College Directory and Dick Vitale.
Three starters and seven men of letters return from 2021-22 Cougars squad, which posted 32-6 overall record, qualified for NCAA Elite Eight tournament, swept regular season titles and the American Athletic Conference Tournament and finished in the nation’s Top 10 for the second consecutive season.
The Cougars have posted seven straight 20-win seasons, including a pair of 30-win campaigns, and have appeared in each of the last four NCAA Tournaments to tie a school record.
The Cougars open their 2022-23 schedule when they host Northern Colorado on Nov. 7 inside Fertitta Center. This will be the first of 18 regular season home games at Fertitta Center.
From there, the Cougars hit the road for the first time to take on Saint Joseph at 5 p.m. (CT), Nov. 11, in Annapolis, Md. as part of the Veterans Classic on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy. .

For the third straight season, the Cougars sold out their season tickets for home games at Fertitta Center.
Fans will have the opportunity to purchase a limited number of single-game tickets for the Cougars’ 18 regular-season home games at Fertitta Center beginning Monday October 24.
