Urologist explains how long sex should last on average
The idea of ââwhat it means to be “good in bed” has many factors, and endurance is certainly one of them. Premature ejaculation is a source of anxiety for many men, and on the other end of the scale, delayed ejaculation can cause similar problems. In an effort to dispel some misinformation, urologist and pelvic surgeon Rena Malik, MD, discusses the average length of sex in real life.
In a new video on his YouTube channel, Malik refers to a study that collected data from 500 couples around the world, who recorded the length of sex using a stopwatch. Data are limited to sex with penetration, excluding foreplay, and only heterosexual couplings were investigated in the research. Penetrative sex is measured in terms of intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT), the time between the onset of penetration and ejaculation.
The study found that the IELT which men consider the “ideal” duration is 16 minutes, but they estimate the actual time to be closer to 9 minutes. However, according to the study, the average IELT is actually only 5.7 minutes.
Malik notes, however, that the recorded times ranged from less than a minute to 55 minutes. âInterestingly, this varied by location,â she says, explaining that Turkey had the lowest average IELT of 4.4 minutes, while the UK had the highest IELT of ‘about 10 minutes.
Of course, all of this research only measures the duration of intercourse as the time it takes for the male partner to reach orgasm during penetration, and does not take into account what is preferable or ideal for the female partner. Malik refers to a survey of over 4,000 women which found that their the ideal IELT would be somewhere in the 25 minute range.
âAgain, it varies from person to person,â she adds. âI wouldn’t put too much importance in those numbers. What I want you to take away is what’s normal, what’s average. And if you hit average, that’s great. important is that you and your partner are satisfied. “
